Already nine days in to the 2008 Olympic Games and I am absolutely pumped up and find myself following many events I didn’t even expect I would be interested in. For those that didn’t know, the 2008 games in Beijing comprise 302 events in 28 sports, including both many of the original Olympian events and new events such as BMX.龙传11人集体博客 雅虎奥运评论团

As I check day after day, on the progress of the many great nations and their quest for the gold, I see that China is still the leader, even if they have been relegated to second place for total number of medals.

I see time after time, in every event, the culmination of regimented hard work that China is famous for ever since the olden days of kung fu temples. You can immediately tell the focused attitude and hunger for the win permeate the games as China takes the stage, not only as the host of the 2008 Olympic Games, but as a contender as it tries to prove their place in this modern world.

Watching the preformace of Yibing Chen, Xu Huang, Xiaopeng Li, Qin Xiao, Wei Yang, and Kai Zou in the Men’s Team Gymnastics, I could see the same dedication, and even some of the moves which Wushu competitors are famous for. It was amazing to see each and every move, so clear in its execution. Despite a few mistakes here and there, the team worked together to cover each other’s shortcomings for the gold. It is this kind of sportsmanship and dedication which motivates me to train myself harder and take pride in living the tenets of “mo-duk” (martial virtue & conduct).

With a total of 27 gold medals, from various events ranging from Badminton (Women’s Singles/Doubles), Weightlifting (Men’s/Women’s), Judo (Women’s), Archery (Women’s), and Shooting (Men’s), China has been clearly making its mark on events generally where other countries have historically taken gold in. Several gold medals have been in new events such as Judo, which is usually completely dominated by Japan, and the same goes for Archery, which is taken by S. Korea.
Unfortunately, all hasn’t been just fun at the games in Beijing. From high smog levels, over-blooming algae, a lip-synced national anthem, and new concrete walls covering the areas of the lower socio-economic sectors have many critics in a frenzy. Although it was obvious that the 2008 Olympic Games would have had to face setback and criticisms, the Games themselves represent the coming together of the nations of the world in celebration through various events in the spirit of brotherhood.

In the spirit of the Games, I believe we should focus on the great accomplishments, help each other fix the mistakes and problems, and promote the the good will the athletes and the nations they represent.

I am looking forward to the many more events to come and especially looking forward to see what China has to offer in its closing ceremony. I can’t wait to see what wonders will be in store, and considering the amazing opening ceremony, I know I won’t be disappointed.(龙的传人:易杨)龙传11人集体博客 雅虎奥运评论团
